Exam Pattern
The NID entrance exam, known as the Design Aptitude Test (DAT), consists of two main rounds: Prelims and Mains. Prelims is a written test, while Mains includes a studio test and personal interview.
NID DAT Prelims:
- This stage assesses a candidate's general aptitude, creativity, and design awareness.
- It includes both objective and subjective questions.
- The Prelims results are used to shortlist candidates for the Mains stage.
NID DAT Mains:
- Candidates shortlisted from Prelims advance to this stage.
- Studio Test: This is a hands-on assessment of a candidate's ability to solve design problems creatively.
- Personal Interview: This round assesses the candidate's personality, communication skills, and design philosophy.
The final merit list for admission to NID is based on the combined scores of Prelims and Mains.
Eligibility
B.DES:
Educational Qualification:
Candidates must have passed the 10+2 (Higher Secondary) or equivalent examination from a recognized board such as CBSE, ICSE, IB, or state boards. This includes candidates who will appear for the 10+2 exam in the relevant year.
Age Limit:
- General Category: Born on or after July 1, 2004.
- Reserved Categories (OBC-NCL, SC, ST): Born on or after July 1, 2001.
- PWD Reserved Category: Born on or after July 1, 1999.
- Foreign Nationals (Overseas): Born on or after July 1, 2004.
Nationality:
- Indian and foreign nationals living overseas are eligible to apply.
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) holding an Indian passport must apply as Indian nationals and not under the Overseas category.
M.DES:
All candidates applying for the M.Des. programme (any discipline) must fulfill eligibility criteria of both age and educational qualification as under.
Age Limit:
- For Indian Nationals in General Category & General EWS Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1993 are eligible to apply for admission.
- For Indian Nationals in Reserved Category (Other Backward Class-Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Caste (SC) & Scheduled Tribe (ST): Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1990 are eligible to apply for admission.
- For Indian Nationals in Person with Disabilities (PwD) Reserved Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1988 are eligible to apply for admission.
- For Foreign Nationals in Overseas (Supernumerary) Category: Only those candidates born on or after 1 July 1993 are eligible to apply for admission.
Educational Qualification
In addition to satisfying the above age criteria, the candidate must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications to be considered eligible for admissions:
- Bachelor Degree of minimum 4-year duration in any specialization, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard from any university and/or institute recognised by the law in India.
- Condition: Candidate must have appeared for all the subjects and backlogs (if any), of the Bachelor Degree Examination by 28 June 2025.
OR
- Full-time Diploma of minimum 4-year duration in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/ Architecture, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard, from university and/or institute recognised by the law in India.
- Condition: Candidate must have appeared for all the subjects and backlogs (if any), of the Full-time Diploma Examination by 28 June 2025.
OR
- Bachelor Degree of minimum 3-year duration in any specialization, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard from university and/or institute recognised by the law in India. Condition: Candidates must have passed the 3-year Bachelor degree examinations by August 2024.
